Without having to install a chat client you can also directly chat from the browser. You can do so by following the below link:
You will be loaded to irc.vbirc.com on port 6667, and auto join the #chat channel as a vbirc_guest user. You can use : /nick YourName (no numbers and spaces or weird characters) to set your nickname. You can join other channels by typing : /join #channelname (Example: /join #help).
Please note that due to security settings from both your security software and your browser the applet will be loaded if you allow it, and when the popup appears please click on [Trust] to accept the applet connection.
