Upgrade: New Servers/Network
Posted: Q1 2008. By: Floris

During the first few months of 2008 we have improved our network quite a bit. Here's a quick summery so everybody is up todate.

- The main channel #vbfans was being used for general chat, the site vbfans.com, wetalk.tv and other web site. So we have moved this to #chat - a more generic place, and now our official chat channel.

- We have replaced our UltimateIRCd servers with Unreal 3.2.7, this way we can offer more features. No data has been lost. All the channels, nicknames, and virtual hosts were converted without any problems. And about 75% of the new features have been enabled.

- The ChanServ, NickServ and other Services have been upgraded. We went from an older version to Anope 1.7.21 and have installed a few new modules, introducing a few new features.

- The ?? google script has been upgraded, so all the google tricks and features are working again.

- We have added additional servers to our network. Here are a few: irc.vbulletin-chats.com, irc.omgboards.com, irc.marchosis.com and irc.wetalksoccer.com. Drastically increasing our capacity and lowering the lag on the more busy servers. The new servers are spread over various data centers and continents, allowing everybody from all over the world to have a faster chat experience.

- We have finally come around introducing new alternative hub servers. This means that when the main hub dies, the network won't split up in 10 individual servers, the servers that are still 'alive' and online will automatically connect to the alternative hubs, allowing basically 80% of the network to continue chatting without much disruption. In the near future we will improve our setup, and make a bigger change so it is easier for everybody to recognize the hubs, the leafs, and remember the server names.

- Due to increased traffic to our network we've introduced a few new operators too. Each with their individual task of managing their channels to lower network abuse, such as Laval in #hockeysfuture, Brian in #soccermamak, and Onimua in #marchosis. Because with more average online users we experience more abuse. This way we have a support staff member online 24/7.

- And finally we have organized ourselves a bit better, creating internal tools such as todo list for the operators. A public web site for our visitors, a statistics web site for our chatters, and a mailinglist for the visitors (and our staff internally) to communicate with our staff.
